Chapter 7

I watched Mason. He looked harmless as he slept. Part of me wondered that if I left him there, would it matter? He’d wake up eventually and then I could just say... I needed a fantastic reason to leave him there... alone... in the forest...

I could have kicked myself, except for not wanting to ruin the look. The demon had a point: I had to explain away what Mason might have seen, including the red flash and my magic. Surely, there was a chance that Mason saw nothing. I mean, a second and no more, right?

A groan reached my ears. My face contorted at my lack of ability to just run off. At least the groan meant he wasn’t dead; that was good considering I didn’t see myself as a necromancer type of witch, anyway.

I crouched down beside him. His eyes were still shut. Just to make sure, I brushed his fringe away from his face. If Sleeping Beauty had been a guy, then I imagine that’s kind of what he’d look like. Except this girl wouldn’t bother with the kiss. After all, why ruin a good thing?

“You okay?” I asked.

One of Mason’s eyelids fluttered open.

“What on earth was that?” he mumbled.

“What was what?”

Mason’s eyebrow rose. Ignore it, Vania. Just stick to the lie and don’t bloody smile and give yourself away. The corners of my mouth twitched, and I faked a cough. Mason narrowed his gaze at me. Bloody hell, does he have to do the intense as thing?

“You know what I’m talking about, Vania. I’m not stupid, you know. I saw it. I saw this thing come out of the forest and it was red and the head had horns and it had two legs and these bat-like wings. It came right at me like a flash and then your hand whacked me. I don’t remember anything else.”

Mason placed his hand on the ground and pushed himself into a seated position. He sat on the twigs and leaves before he gave his costume a brush with his hands. His gaze remained on me throughout the little exercise.

“Flash? Like a flashlight?” Damn, I wish I’d conjured one up. That would’ve made for a pretty convenient excuse, but then where would it have come from? Some overly eager magpie?

“No, not like that. More Halloweeny; like magic.”

“Didn’t your mother ever tell you that there’s no such thing as magic?” I responded.

“Didn’t your mother ever tell you that you shouldn’t tell lies?”

“Well, they aren’t lies until you get caught. Would you agree?”

“Touché.”

The grin returned.

“Come on, I think we need to get moving out of here. After all, I have some place to be and I need to get you to the roadside since you can’t walk without tripping over your own feet.”

“I did not trip over,” Mason objected.

“Do you want me to help you up or not?”

“Yeah, well then give us a hand.” He stuck his hand out towards me and I considered whether to take it. Even if I left him there, he’d probably follow me, anyway.
